Louisville Announces New Department of Transportation to Streamline Infrastructure Projects
Louisville, Ky. (WDRB) – Mayor Craig Greenberg announced on Tuesday that Louisville will be getting its own department of transportation in order to streamline infrastructure projects and investments in the city.
Greenberg highlighted the fact that although the city has received funding for various projects, there has been a backlog of over $100 million in funded projects that have not been utilized. With the establishment of the new transportation department, dedicated project managers will be appointed to oversee projects from start to finish.
The department will be housed within the city’s department of public works and will collaborate with agencies such as TARC, the parks department, and federal and state agencies. Louisville has taken inspiration from other cities like Nashville, Seattle, and Chicago, which have successfully implemented their own municipal department of transportation.
Councilman Anthony Piagentini emphasized the importance of the new department, especially for his district in the east end of Louisville. He noted that despite a 30 percent growth in the district according to the last Census report, the infrastructure has not kept up with the population increase.
The city is currently in the process of hiring for the 11-person department, specifically seeking project managers and project engineers. Greenberg mentioned a long list of projects that the city hopes the new department will address, including Fourth Street, the Belvedere, and the reimagining of 9th Street.
Overall, the establishment of the Louisville department of transportation marks a significant step towards improving the city’s infrastructure and ensuring that funding is utilized effectively for the benefit of its residents.
