Louisville Offering Free Drop-Off for Storm Debris This Week: News from WDRB

City of Louisville Offers Free Drop-Off for Storm Debris Cleanup

Tornado Cleanup Efforts Underway in Louisville

In the aftermath of a powerful tornado that touched down in the west end of Louisville on July 4th, neighborhoods are still grappling with the aftermath of the destructive storm. Strong winds and heavy rain wreaked havoc in parts of the city, leaving debris scattered throughout the area.

Residents like Sandra Wright were taken by surprise by the intensity of the storm. “We didn’t realize it though. We did not realize that the wind was so strong. We didn’t realize it until after the fact,” she shared.

To aid in the cleanup efforts, Metro Public Works has stepped in to provide assistance to residents. The city is offering a free drop-off site for storm debris this week, located at the Meriwether Avenue site. This service is available to Jefferson County residents, allowing them to dispose of debris heavier than 60 pounds and larger than four feet.

Pete Flood from Public Works emphasized the importance of clearing debris to help residents get back on their feet. “For us to be able to get alleys open and larger debris picked up after a disaster that truly damages people’s homes, it’s critical for people,” he stated.

The city aims to have the debris cleared by next week, with plans to pick up larger debris in the affected areas once alleys are accessible. The free drop-off site will operate until Friday, July 12, with daily monitoring to determine if it should stay open.

Residents in the urban services district are also eligible for curbside pickup of smaller debris, weighing less than 60 pounds and measuring under four to six feet. Public Works will be making exceptions for those impacted by the tornado, prioritizing the cleanup of large piles of debris and downed limbs in the affected areas.

It is important to note that only Jefferson County residents are eligible for the free drop-off service, and contractors are not permitted to drop off items. Proof of residency will be required, with driver’s licenses and license plates being documented at the drop-off site.

As the city continues to recover from the storm, Louisville residents are coming together to support one another and rebuild their communities.
