SpaceX Wins $843 Million NASA Contract to Build Spacecraft for International Space Station Deorbiting

SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by billionaire Elon Musk, has secured a massive $843 million contract from NASA to build a spacecraft that will safely deorbit the International Space Station (ISS) by 2030.

The ISS, a collaboration between the United States, Russia, and other countries, has been a crucial research hub in space for over two decades. However, as the station ages, NASA and its partners have decided to bring it down in a controlled manner to avoid any risks to populated areas on Earth.

Under the terms of the contract, SpaceX will construct a US Deorbit Vehicle that will be used to safely guide the ISS back to Earth. NASA will take ownership of the craft and oversee the deorbiting operation.

Ken Bowersox, associate administrator for Space Operations Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, emphasized the importance of this partnership in a press release. He stated, “Selecting a U.S. Deorbit Vehicle for the International Space Station will help NASA and its international partners ensure a safe and responsible transition in low Earth orbit at the end of station operations.”
