Residents in Jefferson County’s East End Propose Creating City of Eastwood to Separate from Metro Louisville

Residents of Jefferson County’s east end are considering forming their own city, separate from Metro Louisville, in an effort to increase safety and control over local developments. The proposed City of Eastwood would encompass 32 neighborhoods with homeowners associations, spanning from Valhalla to Long Run Park and sections of Taylorsville Road.

The city would operate on a budget of over $5 million annually, funded by additional taxes on homes valued between $300,000 and $500,000. This would allow for the creation of a police department, public works department, and increased local control over infrastructure projects.

Supporters of the plan cite concerns over safety, with one resident recalling a home invasion incident that took police over 20 minutes to respond to. Proponents believe that having a dedicated police force in Eastwood would lead to quicker and more effective responses to emergencies.

However, not all residents are in favor of the proposal, with signs along Shelbyville Road expressing opposition to the annexation and labeling it a “sneaky scheme.” The city of Louisville has also stated its disapproval, warning that further division could lead to higher taxes and service overlaps.

Organizers of the City of Eastwood initiative are currently gathering signatures from residents, with a requirement of 66% support from those within the proposed city limits. If successful, Eastwood would not only have its own police force but also provide trash services and public works.

Despite the controversy surrounding the plan, supporters remain optimistic about the benefits of creating a separate city. Public meetings and petitions are ongoing as the community debates the future of Eastwood.
