RCS Messaging Enabled for iPhone Users in the US
The highly anticipated RCS Messaging feature is finally making its way to some iPhone users in the US following the iOS 18 Developer Beta 2 update. The feature, which was unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 on June 10, was set to be included in the iOS 18 release.
Reports have surfaced on social media claiming that select US carriers have begun rolling out support for RCS Messaging on iPhone, with some users already gaining access to the feature. One user, @BrandonButch, shared a screenshot on X (formerly Twitter) showcasing RCS Messaging being enabled on their device. While the text message still displays a green bubble, a new RCS banner is visible within the chat window.
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is hailed for providing enhanced interoperability for cross-platform messaging. It offers features that go beyond standard SMS, such as the ability to share high-resolution media, typing indicators, and an improved group chat experience.
Although RCS has been a staple in the Android ecosystem for years, Apple had previously chosen to focus on its proprietary iMessage service. However, with the introduction of RCS Messaging on iPhone with iOS 18, Apple is finally embracing this messaging standard.
Interestingly, the lack of RCS support on iPhone was a key point in a lawsuit filed against Apple by the US Department of Justice earlier this year. The lawsuit also highlighted the “green bubble” issue, suggesting that it made Android users feel inferior to iPhone users. Despite the introduction of RCS Messaging, Apple has confirmed that messages will still appear with a green bubble, unlike the blue bubble that is exclusive to iMessage conversations.
Overall, the rollout of RCS Messaging on iPhone marks a significant milestone for Apple and its users, bringing them closer to a more seamless messaging experience.
