In a groundbreaking development, Taiwanese exports of graphic processing units (GPUs) and related equipment have soared to over $42 billion in the past year, a remarkable increase from virtually zero in previous years. This surge in exports, valued at $3.5 billion just last month, reflects the skyrocketing demand for AI technology on a global scale.
The data released by the customs administration has revealed that the United States has emerged as the largest customer for the GPU chips, predominantly manufactured by industry giants such as Nvidia Corp. Other notable buyers include companies from the Netherlands and Hong Kong, showcasing the widespread appeal of Taiwanese tech exports.
The Finance Ministry recently announced a 23.5% increase in total exports in June, reaching nearly $40 billion, with exports of computers and related hardware experiencing an astounding 324% growth. Beatrice Tsai, the ministry’s chief statistician, anticipates a continuous growth trajectory in the upcoming months, citing the peak season for exports.
Taiwan’s position as a leading hub for high-end semiconductors, supported by companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., has further solidified its export capabilities. The country’s robust technological ecosystem, including key component suppliers, plays a vital role in meeting the surging demand for AI-driven products.
Economist Gary Ng from Natixis SA emphasized Taiwan’s successful capitalization on the AI boom and the rebound of the tech industry, foreseeing a sustained growth in exports. The resurgence of integrated circuit exports, particularly to the US and ASEAN markets, highlights Taiwan’s resilience amidst economic challenges in China.
The spike in GPU shipments has significantly contributed to Taiwan’s trade surplus with the US, with over $9 billion worth of goods shipped last month alone. This surge underscores Taiwan’s crucial role in the global tech supply chain, underpinned by cutting-edge innovation and adaptability to market demands.
