West End Residents Express Concerns Over Early Closure of Kroger

Metro Council Members Advocate for Extended Hours at West End Kroger Stores

Metro Council Members Address Concerns Over Early Closure of Kroger in Louisville’s West End

Residents in Louisville’s west end have raised concerns about the early closing time of the Kroger locations in their area. While several other Kroger stores in the Louisville Metro area close later, the Kroger stores on West Broadway in the West End close at 9 p.m., which residents say is earlier than they would like.

Markesha Smith, a resident in the west end, expressed her frustration, stating, “There’s not many other places that we can go to. There’s just lack of transportation. There’s people in the neighborhood that are struggling financially.”

To address these concerns, Councilmember Tammy Hawkins, D-District 1, along with other Metro Council members, gathered at the West Broadway Kroger for a press conference. Hawkins shared that community members had alerted her about the store closing before 9 p.m., prompting her to investigate the issue herself.

During the press conference, Frank Hall, another Louisville resident, shared his experience with the early closure, highlighting the challenges faced by residents without reliable transportation.

In response to the concerns raised, a Kroger spokesperson issued a statement apologizing for the early closure and stating that they have addressed the issue with their team. They have committed to keeping the doors open until 9 p.m. every night.

Councilmember Hawkins announced plans to collaborate with Kroger to extend the store hours in the West End, emphasizing the importance of addressing food insecurity in the area. She also urged the community to refrain from taking anything from the store, as the loss prevention data for the West Broadway Kroger is high.

The efforts to keep the Kroger stores open for longer aim to provide residents in the West End with better access to essential groceries and address the challenges of food insecurity in the community.
