Nonprofit organization renovating historic building in Russell neighborhood for affordable housing
Louisville, Ky. (WDRB) — A nonprofit organization is making significant progress on the renovation of a historic building in Louisville’s Russell neighborhood to provide affordable housing for seniors.
Construction on the building located on South 15th Street and West Broadway is currently 40% completed, with crews working diligently to finish installing windows on the top floor by July 11. The building, which has previously served as a candy factory, tobacco warehouse, and office space for the Department of Defense, has been vacant for decades.
Once completed, the building will be known as “The Gateway on Broadway Senior Apartments,” offering 116 affordable units for individuals aged 55 and older. Rent will be based on tenants’ ability to pay, with a cap of 30% of their income.
According to Andrew Hawes of Louisville’s Housing Partnership Inc., the new units will help address the growing need for affordable housing in the area. Construction is expected to be finished by March or April of 2025, with the possibility of tenants moving in as early as December.
In addition to providing housing, the first floor of the building will serve as a community resource center, offering amenities such as a kitchen space, a bank, and areas for classes and celebrations. The total cost of the renovations is estimated to be $50 million.
This project aims to not only provide much-needed affordable housing but also to revitalize a historic building in the Russell neighborhood, bringing new life and resources to the community.
