Louisville Metro Police Using Helicopter to Combat Crime, Catch Suspected Car Thieves
Louisville Metro Police Utilize Helicopter to Combat Crime
Louisville Metro police have been utilizing a helicopter on a nightly basis to combat crime, and this week they shared an example of how effective this tactic can be. In a recent video, the police department showcased how they used the helicopter to catch suspected car thieves.
The footage, captured by their AIR20 unit, shows the helicopter spotting a stolen Toyota Highlander in east Louisville occupied by eight suspected thieves. The helicopter kept the vehicle in sight while communicating with ground units, leading to a high-speed chase down Shelbyville Road, with speeds reaching 110 mph at one point.
As the pursuit continued, the suspects started dumping off at different locations to flee on foot, with the video capturing them running and hopping fences. The Louisville Metro Police Department emphasized the importance of their helicopter unit in tracking down criminals and preventing further crimes.
Earlier this month, LMPD announced that they had made at least six arrests connected to a string of vehicle thefts, particularly on the east side of the city. In a social media post, they highlighted the simple motive of these thieves – loading up in a car, driving to an unsuspecting neighborhood, and trying door handles.
The use of the helicopter has proven to be a vital tool in the police department’s efforts to combat crime and ensure the safety of the community. So, if you spot the LMPD chopper up in the sky at night, know that it is playing a crucial role in keeping the city safe.
