Closure of Afrokanza Lounge in Louisville’s Highlands Neighborhood
The closure of Afrokanza Lounge on Bardstown Road in Louisville’s Highlands neighborhood has been announced after months of investigations into late-night violence and complaints from area residents. The bar voluntarily closed following multiple violations with Louisville Metro ABC, including inadequate security and serving alcohol later than allowed by their liquor license.
The decision to close the lounge comes after a shooting behind the bar in July 2023, which resulted in one fatality and two injuries. Nearby Café 360 also experienced a similar incident in March of this year, leading to the voluntary surrender of their liquor license for six months.
Residents in the area have expressed relief at Afrokanza’s closure, with some attributing the issues at Café 360 to the late-night activity at Afrokanza. The closure is seen as a positive step towards improving safety in the community and retaining longtime customers at neighboring establishments.
Metro Councilman Ben Reno-Weber commended the efforts of ABC and Codes & Regulations in enforcing compliance in District 8, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the well-being of residents over business operations. City officials have pledged to increase patrols in the area to address concerns raised by neighbors about late-night disturbances and violence.
The closure of Afrokanza Lounge marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to address safety concerns and maintain the highest standards of health and well-being in the community. Residents hope that the closure will lead to a more peaceful and secure environment in the neighborhood.
