Louisville photographer’s family honors his memory 4 years after his passing

Remembering Tyler Gerth: Louisville Photographer’s Legacy Lives On Through Non-Profit and Scholarship Program

The legacy of Louisville photographer Tyler Gerth lives on through a foundation dedicated to empowering young artists in the community.

Four years ago, Tyler Gerth was tragically killed in a shooting during protests following Breonna Taylor’s death. Earlier this year, his killer, Steven Lopez, was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Despite the devastating loss, Tyler’s family has channeled their grief into creating the Tyler Gerth Foundation, known as Building Equal Bridges. The foundation provides scholarships and runs the Polaroid Project in partnership with the Louisville Urban League, allowing children to explore photography as a form of storytelling.

Tyler’s sister, Brittany Loewen, spoke about his passion for photography and capturing history. She emphasized the importance of shifting the focus from his death to celebrating his life and inspiring others to share his love for photography.

The Polaroid Project encourages students to see their surroundings in a new light and tell their stories through images and words. Louisville Urban League President & CEO Lyndon Pryor highlighted the impact of the program in helping young artists express themselves and honor Tyler’s memory.

Through their work, Tyler’s family hopes to continue his legacy and inspire a new generation of photographers to make a difference in their communities.

As the community remembers Tyler Gerth, his family’s dedication to empowering young artists shines as a beacon of hope and healing in the wake of tragedy.
